One special case I'd add in the Price-to-substance ratio section is RAM for workstations.  It usually makes sense to buy the base level of RAM from the manufacturer and then upgrade aggressively with RAM bought elsewhere (4 GB minimum, but 8 GB can be had at Crucial for ~$200 now from Crucial).  And of course without such RAM upgrades, the IntelliJ magic becomes questionable. :)</description>
